Serious head injuries are the aftermath of many car accidents

On behalf of P. Paul Aghabala

One of the most serious injures that can follow a car accident is a TBI.

When you think it, activity that you participate in every day that is most likely to get you injured is driving a car. In the United States, 2.3 million people were injured in car accidents 2013. During 2012 in California, 159,696 car accidents resulted in an injury, according to the California Highway Patrol.

When a car accident occurs, injuries can range in seriousness. While the lucky ones are able to walk away with minor bruises and cuts, some collisions can cause others to suffer serious, sometime life-long injuries. One such injury is a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Unfortunately, car accidents are the second leading cause of this type of serious injury after falls.

During a collision, the force of the impact can cause a vehicle occupant's head to hit the window, dash, steering wheel or other object in the vehicle. Because of the great forces involved, the brain hits the interior of the skull. If the brain's contact with the skull is forceful enough, it can cause serious injuries.

According to the Mayo Clinic, TBI sufferers can experience a wide range of symptoms, depending on the seriousness of the injury. Sufferers can experience the symptoms immediately or several weeks after the accident. Mild forms of TBI often can present as headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, confusion or difficulty concentrating. Serious forms of TBI can cause seizures, nausea, difficulty remembering things, or loss of coordination or feeling.

If in an accident, get help

If you are injured in a car accident, time is of the essence when it comes to successfully treating TBI. As a result, it is important to get medical attention as soon as possible to give you the best chances of recovery. TBI treatment can be expensive (and life-long in some cases). However, your treatment expenses may be recouped under California law, if the other driver's negligence caused the collision.

Since the successful recovery of compensation involves many complex issues of proof, it is important to have a skilled attorney working on your behalf. At the Law Offices of Paul Aghabala & Associates, Inc., we are not interested in obtaining a quick settlement for our clients, if it is not in their best interest. We will work on your behalf to secure the full compensation you deserve under the law.
